Getting rewards from a Kickstarter project creator?

So I backed a project $25. At the time I backed it, there was a reward for two wallets for $25, which was cancelled by Kickstarter. What I'm wondering is, can't the project creator send me the rewards regardless of Kickstarter cancelling the reward or not? I realize that Kickstarter isn't a site to preorder things, but I don't see why a project creator can't send a reward to someone who backed them..
That's what I was afraid of... I would hope that the project creator would have a conscience and send me the reward because that's what I had signed up for. But if it's gone and there's no obligation on his part (other than moral obligation) then I guess he won't send it to me... He told me instead to go to his site and preorder two wallets by paying close to $30. So, I would have spent $55 on two wallets...

As far as I know, it's up to the Project Creator if he wants to send the Reward or not.
