what kind of web hosting do i need as a designer?
I am a graphic design student and I have only ever used my school's server to host my website. I am looking into hosting sites and I am not sure what the difference between wordpress hosting and business class hosting. Or if anyone has recommendations for hosting sites, right now I am looking at inmotion hosting.

A little confusing Wordpress.com is the free hosted slightly limited version of te industry standard Wordpress blog platform, wordpress.org is the source of the open source code and a myriad of themes and plugins that you would typically use on a paid host, most people start with an "unlimited" shared server account for about $8/mo where you can add more sites at the cost of about $1 a month more for each additional domain name. You may add more customizing plugins to Wordpress on a paid server and are not at the mercy of a free host that can delete your account on a whim. Some entry level hosts are more "wordpres friendly" than others, those CMS platforms consume more processor power than simpler static sites and can be a bit too slow on some cheap servers. There may be no industry standard for "business class hosting" typically you get more traffic capacity and a bot better support.
Google's Blogger.com is the biggest free blog host, it has no paid upgrades and few editorial restrictions. To get a feel for their style you might look through examples with a Google search for:
site:blogspot.com intitle:design
This search only shows those too cheap to use a custom domain name which makes you look more professional and allows you to relocate to another server without starting over from scratch, though Blogger is a proprietary system that doesn't allow for easy transfer of content or learned skills to a different server.

Blog platforms might be good for you because no real programming is required and they have some degree of flexibility, there are certainly other free gallery flavored social sites like tumblr.com that might suite you.

I have personally had good experience with bluehost for sites with less than 100k visitors per month. If your sites are very popular you will need to find a host with Dedicated Server options. Feel free to email me if you would like help choosing a host.

I will try to answer in simple steps :-

1) Dont get confused with Wordpress hosting and business hosting and all...kick these terms out of your mind for now.

2) Simply go to Godaddy.com (I dont intend to advertise them but they are the best).

3) Select a domain name and if available register it.

4) Choose a basic hosting plan and pay their fees (that is extremely affordable).

5) You will get your login details (username and passwords, etc). upload the html pages of your site to server and you are DONE!

What it means is that you have purchased hosting from Godaddy.com just the way you had got hosting in your schools server (free of cost).

Good luck!

You need a web server that can host your files and a domain name for the web hosting.

I would recommend you for http://www.qwhup.com they are offering domain registration and web hosting at one of the lowest prices in the industry.

They are offering domains at $7.95 and hosting from $1.25 pm with free easy to use site builder. I have been using their services for more than a year and no issues at all.

Hope this helps.
