How can I change the add types shown on my Facebook page?

Facebook always have some adds to the right of the page where you can like a certain page or whatever, but the pages it recommends me are always from my hometown. Stores, people, events, campaigns and stuff from around the town, and they are very uninteresting. How can I change it so that the ones I see are those from other places? I already tried by changing the place I live in but it didn't work. I didn't think it would.
