Dsl on traditional phone line/wire?

Dsl on traditional phone line/wire?
I have dsl but can i can only get dsl through cat5 wire and not regular phone wire. Why is this? Is it because of the speeds or what? We have two lines one for phone and one for internet. They both cant work on the same line. Why is this please explain how this works?
