Email marketing or Seo ?
Which one works better for you and why ? I've never tried email marketing and I don't have any mailing list but I wonder whether email marketing works better than search engine optimization to promote a blog ! ?

Using email to promote a blog doesn't make a lot of sense, the expense of building and maintaining a legitimate email list would not be worth it to just get blog visitors.
FYI, Can-Spam regulations forbid you to just mail a promotion to some list of a million email addresses you found somewhere, you need to establish a relationship then ask them to subscribe to your email list, this process is often done in blogs.

No matter what you do, you should always ensure your site (including blogs) be optimized for SEO. Are you using one of the good seo plugins? All In One SEO, Yoast or Platinum SEO.

Email marketing is Ok after you have got viewers to your site and have a signup form for a newsletter - that allows you to send broadcast emails at a latter date.

However, you should be writing articles (not ads) and submitting them to articles directories with a link to your blog in the article signature. Simalarly participate in forums relevant to your niche with a link to your blog in your signature.

These two techniques have different purposes.

SEO

Depending on your keyword or market research, this can help you acquire targeted traffic to your blog. When combined with social media, the techniques become more effective. Now the thing is you need to be patient to see results.

The advantage is that you can apply SEO to any type of web property. The disadvantage is it takes time to see results and all you efforts are at the mercy of search engine algorithms. Anyhow, all you need to ensure is quality content, good user experience, and diverse technqiques.

Email marketing

This may not be applicable to a lot of websites or niche. It's either you set up a really good email marketing campaign or forget about it as it can hurt your site more than it can help. Also, email providers are often strict and there is a high chance for email messages to be tagged as spam. On the other hand, when done right, you will have your own customer base who are loyal to whatever it is you have to offer. What's important is providing value and making a good connection to your subscribers. Also, you will become independent from any search engine algorithm changes.

Hope this helps.

And EM is like fishing in the ocean. you never know. unless you have a good targeting customer mail list and you can delivery the mail to them properly.
