Hosting Your Own Website?
Hello, I need to buy a new laptop for school.

I was wondering if a laptop would be enough to create your own server to host your website, or if desktop computer and a lot of other stuff are required to do such a task.

In which case, I would just forget it until later years when it is reasonable to get all this stuff and just get a laptop for school.

Also, if I don't create my own server, how do I host a website?

Please help,

Thanks!

Unless you plan a career as a system administrator, the exercise of setting up a server and maintaining it day and night is just not worth your while when you can get a free hosting account on a dedicated server on a high speed internet connection would serve any experiments. Many basic ISP connections particularly cable are asymmetrical, slower when uploading like a server mostly does.

Shared hosting accounts are the most common, the most often have 50 to hundreds of sites on a single PC, which should give you an idea as to what the laptop could handle, most hosts are running open source Linux operating systems.

You can indeed host your website on your laptop. However, it is not recommend as your website has to be available 24/7 which would take a toll on your laptop's lifespan. Your best bet would be to host it on a desktop computer. This may be expensive though as you will need to get at least one dedicated IP at home and port 80 will have to be opened from your ISP. I would suggest you to host your domain at hosting company.

I work for legendwebhosting.com and they are currently offering 6 months free hosting. Check it out!
