How to gain confidence when talking to girls?

I can't talk to girls for sh*t. Unless I've known them for like ever and am far too deep in the friend zone to ever be able to pull them anyway without been off my face drunk I can not talk to a girl. I can all fine over Facebook, but in person I just don't know what to say, I get really nervous and sometimes embarrassed, it always gets really awkward and I don't know what to do. How do I get the confidence to be able to talk and flirt with them?
And by the way, I have had a girlfriends before but I'd known her years and then we went out for 2 1/2 years so yeah. Now I have no idea how to talk
