windows xp computer tower disk read error?
Hello, so my windows xp hp pavilion tower got a disk read error. From what I have researched the harddrive is bad. What im trying to find out is if it is possible to buy like a external harddrive and plug that it and use that if I would be able to use the computer again. If so does anybody know where I could find a cheap harddrive to use. I would get the internal one fixed but Its hard to find someone working on xp computers. Thank you

You definitely don't want to do an external hard drive. Even if you can get Windows to install and boot, it's going to run at USB speeds (a fraction of your motherboard's hard drive connection).

Since the internal hard drive has to be replaced, your first step is to make sure you have the complimentary software to finish the job. At the very least you need your operating system disc (probably cannot get them from your manufacturer anymore due to the age).
It would also be helpful to have any drivers discs but they can be found online with relative ease.

Next step is to determine if you have an IDE or SATA hard drive. http://www.pcstats.com/articleimages/200...desata.jpg is a solid picture help you.
SATA hard drives are the current standard and therefore easy to find. IDE you'll have to look around.

Data may or may not be recoverable. It's a 50/50 when you cannot get into windows.

the external will not work. Your main OS is on the internal drive
