Hey Gerald,
An autoresponder is what marketers and others use to communicate with their list of customers. When you see on a site or a blog a place to enter your name and email address for a free gift, a newsletter or more information etc. that goes to an autoresponder, and you will immediately receive an email from the co. or person who's site that was.
You are then generaly asked to verify your request for the information, and you are then on that persons mailing list.
The autoresponder can then send you an email automatically every day, every other day, or however the person or co. set up the autoresponder to contact you. They can set up messages to contact you days, weeks even months in advance. Autoresponders can also be used to send broadcast messages anytime the co. wants to, for promotions or special events.

Hope that helps,
Best of luck,

Autoresponder is a software, but it does not reside on your computer. You go to say aweber.com (an autoresponder service) and signup for a monthly fee to access the autoresponder tool they offer.

What you do with it?

You will be able to put an optin-form on your website, blog, etc (optin form is a form where your website visitors can enter their name and email and click submit). You will also be able to create a series of email messages in your autoresponder, which will automatically go to the peope (their emails) who use your optin-form.

There are many other features such as: setting when an email is sent, tracking, split testing, etc.
