If you cannot get it to work then just reset the thing and reconfigure it yourself.

Connect your router directly to the computer using an ethernet cable if you haven't done it yet.

Get the router's gateway IP address by opening a Command Prompt and type IPCONFIG. It should look something like 192.168.x.x.

Type the router's gateway IP address on your browser (ex. http://192.168.1.1). That will take you to the router's user settings page but you will be asked for the user and password before you can proceed.

If you don't know the user name and password, try the defaults found in any of these links:
http://www.routeripaddress.com/brands
http://www.routerpasswords.com
http://cirt.net/passwords
http://www.phenoelit-us.org/dpl/dpl.html
http://portforward.com/default_username_password
http://www.pcwintech.com/default-router-modem-passwords

If the defaults don't work then somebody must have changed it. Reset the router by pushing a pin or tip of a paperclip through a tiny hole behind the router. Hold it for about 30secs until you see the power light turn off and back on. That should erase the router's settings and return to defaults.

Once you are able to get inside the router's user interface, go to the Wireless settings tab and change the SSID if you want. The SSID is the wireless network name that shows up on wireless devices when the wifi signal is detected. Unless you have a device that uses WEP only, select the security type WPA2 as it is more secure than the old WEP and enter your desired wifi passphrase.

If you need more information, read your router's manual. It can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.

Note: Once you've changed your security settings, you will need to reconfigure all your wireless devices for them to be able to connect to your router with the new wifi setting.
