so im writing an essay and its on social media networks like FB and twitter. So i can not think of how social media networks affect society ? please help!

The most important thing, is how was society before social websites, in the twentieth century after inventions of the telegraph, telephone, radio, cars, airplanes, but before mass production of the computer.
How are the social media used?
Think of what these websites do to the natural resources of traditional society, when the society didn't have free access to the global community.
