Question about Robots.txt and Sitemap.xml?
Do I just upload both of these to the root directory of my web hosting or do I need to register them with search engines or do anything else with them?

Cheers

Both files must used for search engine purpose, one is for not indexing the particular file and other one is for indexing every web page. So in this manner when we want to block some file or folder not to index in search engine we used the robots.txt & when we want to index our all files in search engine then we use sitemap.xml

So both are the important one. Hope this will be useful for you.

Yeah! both files have dissimilar importance:
Robots.txt file provides a way to search engine bots that which url is to be crawl.
While sitemap is collection of all important urls in a systematic way for SE bots and users also.
