If a seller on eBay has just created their account and is selling expensive kitchen appliances...?
... for less than half price, what are they trying to do? Is it a scam? PayPal is the only payment option so it's not like they can take the money and run.

They can take the money and run. You will be covered but they will still get the money out of PayPal. There is a way the scammers do this and get away with it. I happen to know that way but I'm not posting it here for all the world to see and scam people.

If you KNOW it's too good to be true then it is. There is a report link on every eBay listing. Use it. eBay is so bombarded with these reports that often items end with buyers before they get to them.
