Why is the internet so full of counterculture?
It seems that online, the prevailing views and opinions go against the opinions of real life. For example, while in real life many modern artists tend to be popular, they are often the most hated online. Why is that?

First, your example seems a little off to me. Modern art is not popular in 'real life'. Millions pay to watch football. A free art show can have trouble getting people in the door.
More to your point, though, the counter culture is more prevalent online because those are the types of people that spend their time on the internet. If I put two videos on YouTube, one about a video game and one about knitting, which do you think would get more views? The people interested in video games are more likely to be familiar and comfortable with finding online content. This will change with each succeeding generation as even the more traditional of society are brought together online. Except the Amish. They'll still be churning butter.

People don't feel free to express their counter opinion in real life for fear of back lash -
But when given the ability to do it anomalously online they blast their opinion everywhere they can.

As is the case with racists who will call people every name in the book online but only use those words amongst their friends that share their opinion in real life.
