get a domain
get hosting
connect domain to hosting
setup ftp (you can use Filezilla for free) and upload your files or...

use CMS such as Wordpress... to do this:

go to your hosting's cpanel
find a tool called fantastico
install wordpress
log in and configure wordpress
load your content as posts or pages

your website becomes live to the world

So you have a website; Now first thing you need is a domain name to refer your business to the online users, I personally use Godaddy to register my domains; Second, you need a web hosting to host (to display your website) your contents (website or webpages) when someone enters the domain name in their browser; unless you host the contents your domain will not display the message what you intend to convey to your readers; Third, you need to map your domain name with your hosting account DNS (This is some trick task if you don't have any knowledge about domain names and domain name servers); Fourth upload your website (files such as pages with codes, images, css, javascript etc.) generally this should be done using a FTP application as well as using the online ftp option available with your hosting service provider.

1) Register a domain name
2) Buy in a web hosting plan
3) Map your domain name with your web hosting DNS (Domain Name Server)
4) Upload your website to the web hosting account
5) Voila! your website is live or activated as you mentioned.

For your reference:

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the Internet address of a website or blog. (For example, http://www.arunkumar.biz is my domain name.) You'll need to choose a domain name. If you already have a domain name, that's fine. I'll tell you how to use that.

Some domain name advice:

Your domain name should be simple, obvious, and as short as possible.
Domain names are unique. You can only register a domain name that no one else has taken. Most good, short names were taken years ago. If the name you want is taken, try adding a descriptive word related to your business to the end of the domain. For example, XYZ.com for a tourism company might be taken, but XYZtours.com probably won't be.

What is web hosting?

Web hosting is where a hard copy of your website (or blog) actually stays, on a computer (web server), in a building somewhere, when you put it on the Internet. It doesn't matter where in the world you're located, or where your web hosting is located.

My recommendation for web hosting

Choosing a web hosting provider is not easy. There's a huge number of very similar web hosts out there, and 99% of the information about them is bogus. Feel free to do your own research into web hosting, but I think you'll find it mind-boggling.

Whether they say so or not, all sites that recommend web hosting receive payment from the web hosting company, for the promotion of their product. Because of this, the Internet is littered with sites that promote any and every web host, regardless of the quality of those hosts. Typically, the person making the recommendation has no knowledge of the host. This makes it extremely difficult for a novice like you to find accurate information about web hosting.

So I recommend Godaddy.com. It's the host I use myself. It's simple, reliable, and much cheaper than most alternatives. I also believe in doing business ethically, so I like to be upfront about the fact that this site is supported by commissions from some of the products, including web hosting, that it recommends.

If you need any assistance you can contact me; search for "SEM expert" in Google, my website (arunkumar.biz) will be at the 4th or 5th position from which you can find my contact details.
