Earning from Wordpress falls into two categories. The first is using WordPress as it is intended and creating a website or blog from it, then monetizing that blog to earn money.
The second is tapping into the vast market for programming, designing and customizing websites or blogs for WordPress. If you have design and/or programming skills, you can tap into the huge number of site owners using WordPress and address their various needs.

A really good topic would be your favourite breed of dog. People can be extremely passionate about their dog. Pick one breed only, e.g Labrador, or Golden retriever etc.
You could have affiliate ads on the site related to training courses, and links to sites like amazon where people can buy pet products

I just started a site based around golden retrievers. Even though the site is not yet finished I'm already getting traffic and sales.
An exact search on google keyword tool for "golden retriever" gives low competition with over 450,000 searches per month. Thats amazing

Best of luck

Your idea of making your own website through WordPress is definitely a good one. For this time, you don't want to bother yourself about the traffic that's going to occur in your site. All you have to do is create a fresh content like what you've said you're going to put the story of your life; and then you go from there. After you build your website and put up some useful and or inspirational contents you'll have to be wise in terms of sharing it to public, social media will then be the best place for that. When you're getting tons of traffic then it's the time to convert them into MONEY, you can use Google Adsense for that.

Find a topic you are passionate about or have much interest in. Use amazon, clickbank, etc. to add products or services to your site as an affiliate. Create unique content like articles on your topic. Dont like to write? Use 99centarticles.com, awesome site.
I found one website to be very helpful in generating traffic through high page rank backlinks.
HigherMyPageRank.com is a great service, I highly recommend it.

Wordpress is a good start, but getting your domain name and hosting is essential. You cannot add any plugins with a free wordpress blog for one.
Purely hosting is one option but there's many other options like hostzilla and hostgator.
It just gives you more options to optimize your blog for better search engine rankings for a specific keyword.
Choosing a domain name can be anything you would like to make money on. I myself use amazon affiliate program to make posts on product reviews, so for example if you want to advertise cat food or whatever you choose, make sure you use these keywords when choosing your domain name.
Google likes exact matches.
It can become overwhelmed especially when you are not sure where to start. I have been using Webfire's software with 22 build in tools, and never looked back. It teaches you everything from beginning to end.
Check out the video on my blog.
If you have any other questions or concerns, i'll happily assist

do you have a hobby or are you very good in something? Then write about this.
check if you find some affiliate products about this topic, if there are Google adsense ads and so on....
just start doing your blog and try to monetize a little.
In the end you need to drive traffice to your page.

Here are some ideas for getting traffic:

- PPC (like google adwords)
- Video Marketing (especially via YouTube)
- here at Yahoo! Answers
- do SEO
- submit articles
- Squidoo and Hubpages
- Forum and Blog commenting
- Craigslist

Wordpress sites are a great idea as you can put them up really quickly.

I would recommend diversifying your online presence though because using Wordpress to make money through advertising leaves you pretty vulnerable to your advertisers, especially Google.

There are several easy online business models that you can ramp up pretty quickly.
