The few free domain names out there tend to be search ranking poison, The ones they give away may not be worth your while, due to the high amount of abuse of them by fly by night scam artists. Google recently blocked 11 million free .co.cc domains:

"According to an investigate by Anti-Phishing Working Group, .co.cc free domains have been sponsoring 4966 phishing attacks from July 1st to December 31st 2010, that’s why Google finally decided to block it."

Easy to obtain, poorly managed domain names invite all sot of fly by night criminal operations who don't care about burning the reputation of a disposable name. Your better off just using the sub-domain that free hosts give you.

If you but a name by all means try to get a .com, they have the best resale value. Some registrars like Godaddy have coupon specials giving a low 1st year price. sometimes as low as $3. Registrars commonly offer ,info names for $2 in the first year, some suspect they take an additional year to gain search rank traction, again because Google doesn't trust the operator of a $2 site, when renewed for $10 in year 2 it gets more respect.

there are plenty of 'free' hosts that typically put ads on your pages or charge an upgrade free for things like using your own domain name, Google's free hosting, like Blogger.com has no upgrades, allows custom domain name and can be setup with no programming.

Indeed it is possible. It's in two parts: first you need a domain name, the address where your site will be accessible to the visitors. You can choose a good free domain name for your site on http://www.getfreedomain.name

Second, you need to get a hosting company that provides the 24/7-uptime servers your site is served from. Luckily for you, there are a lot free hosts around. Here is one comparison: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison..._services, but simply searching for "free hosting" should present a few options.

But you should be aware that these free services come with absolutely no warranty and you may lose your site thus-hosted, along with the established visitor base, at anytime and for no reason. It makes it thrilling, I guess. Big Grin
