What type of phone is right for me?

I am in the market for a new phone and would like some suggestions. I originally thought of jumping on the droid/evo/iphone bandwagon, but I'm a little hesitant what with the high monthly data plan charges on top of voice. I don't use my voice that much, and use some text, but I'm primarily interested in smartphones for mobile access to facebook, twitter and other social networking tools. I don't really care about all the multimedia stuff, but I could see browsing coming in handy for when I want to look at product reviews when I'm in a store instead of trusting some sales rep. Handheld games are of no interest to me. I have a separate MP3 player. I have a nice camera, and don't like taking pictures everywhere I go anyways. News and finance upates would be nice, but aren't really necessary.
Here is the thing; I realized that there is no 4G coverage in my area, and probably won't be for at least another year or two. Verizon claims it will have nationwide LTE coverage by 2013, and I have no idea how long Sprint's Wi-Max will take to get here in Western New York (they are in Rochester and Syracuse, but no plans to get to Buffalo). I think I would not be forced to pay some 4g monthly fee when they don't even provide that speed in my area.
