nowadays you don't you submit it to google but that only gets you so far sometimes it will be listed sometimes it won't. there is a 50/50 chance to get it listed. to get backlinks not everyone is listed it could take up to a month to a year

then you need to go into forums and start answering questions fill in your profile and in the signature panel put in your website address.

don't spam forums unless you know the answer this can get you a bad reputation or get you banned from the site. so make sure you read and know the answer to the questions that you have knowledge in.
