What device to buy if I want to spread existing wi-fi internet so anyone can use it on mobile?
Hi, my roommate has an internet connection via wi-fi (he has a switcher and a modem), nothing with antennas, so he can use the internet on anything that he directly plugs into one of the internet devices.

I would like to use that internet on my phone but there's no wi-fi available. I know it's possible to "stream" his internet, someone already did it here before. I just don't knoe what device to buy.

Thanks guys Smile)

the current router, could have built in antennas with the wifi off.. if you google search the make and model this will tell you, if it doesn't then 2 options..

1. get a wireless access point that would attach to the router, and supply wifi connection.
2. replace the current router, with a wireless router.

Dear Asker,

I think you misuse the term wi-fi, I think your roomate has an internet connection - but not a wirless (wi-fi) access point.

You need to add to his setup a wireless router (with enough ports, it can replace his switcher as well).
Once active, the router will deploy a wirless network you can use with phones, tablets etc.

He can't just have a switch and a modem. Unless what you refer to as a "switcher" is a router. And the vast majority of wireless routers do not have antennae.

Maybe he simply turned off the wifi completely or has just turned off SSID broadcast. If the SSID broadcast is turned off, then you will never see the wifi network, even though it is still there. Then there is also the use of a MAC address list. Any of these things can be used to hide a wife network.

I've never heard the term "switcher" before. A router is what you would need to broadcast the signal in the air aka wifi.
