I don't know what to do in college?

I'm 19 years old and currently in college for an intro to media year. This one year certificate program let me see the different kinds of work in media such as film production, writing, photography, public relations, etc.

The only courses that I like are humanities and film. I like working on stories and telling them through videos but I don't like all the editing that is involved. I'm more of a thinker and have a view of how something should be. I like making decisions and managing things. I do have my own ideas, but I work really well improving the ideas of others. For example, I could hear a pitch for a movie/short and be able to come up with how it would work the best. I'm good at thinking of camera angles, dialogue, casting actors and scheduling everything so it works smoothly.

However, the programs that I see in my college are more focused on the actual production of film and tv and not as much on directing/producing. I don't want to end up working for a small company and sitting on a computer all day editing boring videos. I'm just afraid on spending time and money on a program that might not get me where I want to be. I would really like to look into jobs where I am in charge, but I don't know where to start. My college points me to my program coordinator who is usually too busy.


Another work area that I thought of was broadcast radio. I think it would be interesting writing and recording different projects. Due to my job, I have some contacts with two major radio stations in my city (Toronto). I plan on going down and checking out the studios when I have time.

I currently work part time at a night club and I do like it. I get to meet some cool people and get invited to events all around the city. I think I just really enjoy the social scene and talking with other people.

Another thing I like is money (I never thought I'd be saying that haha). Namely buying and selling things. I'm good at sales and always willing to invest into things that will make me money. I am always buying and selling things and it's a great supplement to my income. With the help of a partner, I enjoy buying older cars, fixing them up,and selling for a profit. I feel like someday I would enjoy dealing with more big ticket items such as property.

I know this is long and a lot to take in but I wanted to share my dilemma. I'm good at these things and I don't know where I would fit career wise.

How do I know what I really want to do in my future?

You're 19: you aren't meant to know. Keep your options open, try different things (as you are), and I assure you that you will find what you want to do for the rest of your life. I know its corny, but no one can tell you what you should do, you'll find out for yourself.
