Which one is the explanatory variable and which one is the response variable? And why?

A response variable is the particular quantity that we ask a question about in research studies. From your example, I am thinking this is usage of social media. An explanatory variable is any factor that can influence the response variable, so I am thinking you are looking at the GPA because what is being ask about is how GPA influences usage of social media.
