If it is not a rare or one-off item then see if there are more for sale and what price they are closing at so you do not overbid. Wait for a reasonably priced one if you can wait.

Use a proxy bidder so it bids for you automatically when you cannot or if you are prone to forget even if you are at the computer at the time. Eg auction sniper
