basically the ads that come up are owned by companies, and for every ad that gets clicked, that company gives some money to the search engine (I.E. Google, yahoo, bing, etc.)

Ads and website exposure. Google gets paid for putting a Web link on the front page by the website owner. Search engines also usually have side businesses. Like Google has you tube, Android and other stuff. Yahoo has the news and education.
