It's because the items are used.

I think it's because a lot of the things that people sell on there are out of date or not new. I got a phone case that was 4 dollars and lasted a month.

Generally it's not anymore since the online shops took over a lot of it. If something's cheap then often it's sourced directly from the manufacture (usually from Hong Kong), or more commonly, it's just used and the owners want rid of it. I only really use ebay as a last resort these days. I've had too many instances of inaccurate descriptions and scams so it becomes tiresome getting your money back after a while. As I rarely buy anything too expensive from there anyway, I always end up debating whether it's worth even going through the hassle of getting my money back. Lots of little things add up to a big thing though I suppose.
I think I may have strayed a little there.

because a lot of people put the same items on, there not usually set at a retail price, more bid for what it's worth. something is only worth what your willing to pay for it, so if you want to buy cheap your only going to put a certain amount on items.

zero overheads plus a large turnover means the guy can sell at a smaller profit and there are thousands of merchants on ebay selling new products , often the same you can get elsewhere ALWAYS compare the price you see with the price on amazon and elsewhere

Not everything are cheap on ebay. However it is an auction site, so there are possibilities to get cheap products.
