Most Japanese are pretty appearance conscious. It's an Asian thing, and even I don't fully understand it having been raised by Japanese people in Japan (as a white person). Foreigners are usually seen as a bit of a rarity. Most of us are seen as fat by Japanese standards, as Japanese really really take care of themselves (especially the women).
