Am I violating someone else's privacy rights if, in Facebook...?
So, here's the deal. Here is a vague sequence of events that happened, and if possible, could I be told if I am violating the other guy's privacy rights?
1. A Facebook friend of mine--let's call him X-- posts a status up regarding the demise of pop culture and Justin Bieber, and asks whether it is evidence for the existence of a supernatural deity.
2. Friend X's friend-- call him Person Y, who is by no means, a friend of mine-- comments that he is also happy about the demise and a recent string of events concerning the pop star.
3. Enter myself, and in an attempt at humor, I state that the supernatural deity, if existent and cares about humans, probably is a fan of pop music and the child singer.
4. Person Y, clearly a fundamentalist with no sense of humor, states the obvious that the supreme supernatural deity is absolutely a fan of no mortal, and that I should stick to the subject.
5. In more serious terms, I state that I wouldn't be composing a critique of Bieber, until he is old enough to think for himself, or make judgments on his part.
6. He states that I am now playing the Deity by judging him, and that I should stop.
7. I say that he also has jjudged the kid, and that I would stop when he does.
8. And finally, he starts typing in ALL CAPS-- YOU KNOW THE FEELING, IT'S AS IF SOMEONE IS SQUEEZING YOUR RETINAS TO ADJUST TO THE MAGNANIMOUS PROPORTIONS. He tells me that I am offending his beliefs by saying that God is probably a Bieber fan.
9. I reply that I am not surprised he is typing in all Caps, and that he has offended my beliefs by saying that God is not a Bieber fan. I realize, but speak not, that he lost his sense of humor way before he lost his virginity.
10. He calls me an idiot twice and punk once for calling him by his last name, and for not respecting his beliefs.
11. He also says that he is more courageous and has more "balls" (as he put it) for putting as a profile pic, his own picture, while I have a scenery as mine. In short, my profile pic shouldn't show anything but my face, according to him. He has clearly resorted to ad hominem attacks.
12. After a bit more ranting between each other about abstract stuff, and insulting each others' intelligence, I change my profile pic from the scenic one. I change it to his photoshop-editted face being disguised as Joker (from Dark Knight) and with the caption that reads, "Person Y thinks it's more courageous to post a picture of himself up, rather than a scenic one, so here it is". Except that, I spell his last name incorrectly deliberately.
13. Mr. Fundie gets all upset and sends me a message, saying that he is contacting his attorney, and reporting me to facebook. He asks me to stop posting "stupid shit up and put the scenic picture back again".
14. Needless to say, I change my profile picture, but I copy and paste the above quoted section in the comment thread.

In my defense, in my profile picture, his face was disguised enough just to show his face structure, and eyes. The rest have been layered over with Joker's smile, green hair, black eye circles, and white makeup. I also spelled his last name wrong, shortened his first name. Also, he started using profanity. I still haven't done so, except to quote him. Not to mention, his profile picture was public for everyone to see, along with a few of his photos.

So, I realize that I may have given a bit too much information, but hopefully, that is enough for you to make a decision that is cohesive and helpful. I'd be obliged if you could tell me what would be wise for me to do, what he could do theoretically, etc. Thanks a lot.

No, you have violated nothing. I could take his photo and go to town on it. He can't do anything about it. He posted it online for the world to see so you have not violated any privacy.

PS: Beiber sucks.

Most people who threaten to sue don't. But even more important than the unlikely possibility of a lawsuit is knowing when to walk away, whether in person or in social media. And I agree with Rawr.
