What if my domain name expires....?
If i purchase a domain name for 1 year let's say on godaddy or weebly, how do i renew/extend it? If let's say on the 9th month I decide on extending it for another year, is it possible? Or I need to let it expire first before buying it again?

I just started a blog on weebly and planning on buying a domain name. i'm a novice. please give me help and advice. thanks!

Hi Mar,

You just have to log into your account where ever you bought the domain and renew your domain name.

You can renew it before it expires - in fact, it's a good idea to do so. A good hosting company will send you reminder emails before it expires so that you have the chance to renew it. You may get a better deal buying multiple years at a time, and this also has a little bit of SEO value (search engines see multi-year purchases as an indicator that you're serious about the site and therefore rank you a little higher).

If you do let it expire, it's more expensive to save it from expiration, if someone else doesn't buy it before you have a chance to buy it back. Plus you'd likely have to upload all your site content again if you do let it expire.

I recommend NameCheap for domain names - I've been using them for years. There's a link below - hope that helps!

In addition, depending upon where you buy your domain, the domain register site can automatically renew it every year. Make sure this is what you want done and that it does renew automatically because if your domain expires and it's been past a certain period, you can't get it back automatically.

Check out our guide on domain names

In answer to your question, most companies will allow you to set up auto renewal where the domain name automatically renews itself every year. You do not need to do this but you will have to remember to log in every year and renew the domain.

If you are serious about bloggin you may want to look at a more serious blogging platform. Wordpress.com could work for you. You could also buy a hosting package and install Wordpress there. This has the advantage that you get everything in one place, and you have more flexibility on your setup.
