how to tell my best friend I used to self harm?
I just feel like since me and her are so close she should just know that about me. that's all. I just don't really know how to tell her or to explain to her why I did that to myself. any advice?

Well, I have been through this before, and I understand how you feel. It depends how comfortable you are around each other before you tell her. I'll give you an example scenario for two close friends:

You: Uh, [name]? I have to tell you something.
Friend: Sure, go ahead.
You: Well, about [ the time since you last self harmed], I was feeling a little down and I felt like anything.
Friend: Aw, you poor thing!
You: [smile] Well yeah, but I was so unhappy, that I did something. Something terrible, that I would never do again. I self harmed, [name].

And hopefully, this will bring out a positive vibe during the conversation. Smiling helps, by making your friend more comfortable. And saying her name often keeps her engaged in what you are saying. I hope all goes well.

I dont have any experience because I've never been in your position but I think you need to be honest with her. At the end of the day, she's still your best friend and you're still you. She should be honored that you trust her so much to tell her. If she's nasty about it then it's obvious she wasn't a real friend in the first place.
If you're scared about the reaction from her, maybe do it over social media but if you can, do it face to face. Don't feel like you should explain yourself to her. She should understand that it's hard for you, so do it at your own speed.
