Cookies are files downloaded from websites. They do things like track your browsing to target you with ads, and keep you logged into you account on websites. They are almost never harmful.

Cookies are what websites and browsers use to keep track of you. There are different types of cookies and you have probably run into some while doing online shopping. Tracking cookies are how online stores keep track of what you purchased and it's how they will be able to show you ads on things you would likely want to purchase based on your previous purchases.

I have linked an article that gives a clearer picture of exactly what cookies are and the different types. I hope this helps.
