Do Amazon gift cards work right away?

I just bought an Amazon gift card for my daughter, and she wants to use it now. We tried entering the code into the Gift card/promotional code section, but it said the code wasn't valid

Maybe the cashier didn't activate it right. Do you have receipt? Take it back and have them fix it. They should work right away.
