Indexing probably refers to the search result position for a site.
SRPs are always for a specific search keyword phrase, individual pages are ranked for keyword searches, not nessesarily site home pages.

To check the search result position for a list of keywords, one could use either the free rankchecker for firefox http://www.link-assistant.com/rank-tracker/ to generate a search ranking report for the list of keywords, the latter has some other analysis functions.

Back-links are links from other sites, which search engines use as an indicator of a site's "popularity" and are a strong influencer of search rank positions.
Services like backlinkwatch.com or opensiteexplorer.org will report most but not all links to a website, these sites are unable to check all of the billions of pages on the internet for links, they will typically skip low quality junk sites, which would provide little ranking benefit.

Hello RK,

You had raised a good question...Here is the difference between them.

Indexing

If you want your site to display on search engines like Google, Bing, the pages must be indexed. Indexing in the mean keeping a copy of website pages of your site to display on search results. If more pages you indexed, then your site will displayed more on SERP (Search Engine Results page).

What pages are indexed can be seen from your webmaster tools.Go to left side panel at webmaster tools Google Index-->Index Status

Back-Links

These are the links you get back from other third party sites. The visitors of that site may can refer your sites from that links. If you get more back-links having high PR, then your site get more authority.

Sites to know back-links for your site-

1. Backlinkwatch.cam

2. Opensiteexplorer.com

3. Majesticseo.com

4. Ahrefs.com

5. Can also be seen in your webmaster tools.
