You certainly want have a Google Adwords account that entitles you to access their Keyword Planner tool, you ultimately need search volume stats to gauge the value of a keyword. There are tons of free courses, just watch out you don't use keyword stuffing techniques that worked 5 years ago which some may still be teaching.

Here's an intro to keyword research by an authority I trust:

I have just written a short blog about this very subject here - http://freeswagsites.com/free-keyword-searches

If you want a little free training in keyword research techniques, you can try a free starter membership at Wealthy Affiliate. Lesson 7 has a video all about keyword research and how to use those keywords in your posts to get ranked well. Ultimately, its about good content rather than cheap SEO tricks, but there are some simple ways to stack the odds in your favour legitimately. http://freeswagsites.com/wealthy-affiliate

The technique suggested by Peter (above) is called the "Alphabet Soup" technique. Say you want to write about xbox controllers, put "xbox controllers" into google search bar and see the google instant suggestions. you can go through the alphabet like "xbox controllers a" etc. to get lots of keyword ideas based on what people are searching for. You can also get ideas for words preceding - e.g. "axbox controllers" (no space!) will give you words beginning with a obviously.

This will just get you ideas - you then need to find out volume of searches and competition. Try it out with the 30 free keyword searches using the tool identified in my blog post cited above.

There is a great video here http://goo.gl/JPB8YL
