For search engine rankings in Google, they favor .com, .net and .org. If rankings aren't important to him then no. But if he's trying to get traffic organically then yes.

.com is for business. .org is for non-profit. He is wasting time and money. .ws is for personal profiles etc for friends, colleagues. Just advice him to sell it.
