what is trackback url in terms of SEO?

In many social bookmarking site there is an option for trackback url but exactly do not know what need to enter in the field. Please suggest.

Hi Amruta, A Trackback is a method for web authors to request notification when somebody links to one of their articles. This enables authors to keep track of who is linking, and so referring, to their content. Blogging platforms such as WordPress, Drupal and Movable Type, support automatic pingbacks where all the links in a published article can be pinged when the article is published, although WordPress is considered the favored platform for trackback linking. Blogger does not support trackback linking.

Trackback is a means that allows you to connect your published link with an additional website. It is mainly considered vital for social bookmarking where one has to retain trackbacks. Suppose you own a company named as ABC and you have listed it in some social bookmarking site, here you can use trackback to refer the same link to some other sites as well. However, you should be sure that the site which you have referred is a very trusted site such as Wiki, etc.

That's correct. Trackback means links to a website that can provide much more information on the subject in a non commercial way. When i bookmark for some of our commercial client websites i usually use trackback to link to trusted news sources on the topic as
The New York Times
CIA - The World Factbook
wikipedia
About.com
CNN and more like them.

Or sometimes you can send a trackback to other bloggers and news articles inspired you on the subject. This way you are promoting your subject with a link to an authoritative links on the web.
