Are people able to tell if a website is free?

Are there differences between free and paid websites that when someone clicks on them, they can tell which is which?
Or are there differences, only an expert will know?

Web sites behind a pay wall will tell the user that the content they want to view has to be paid for before they can view it. Then they're taken to a sign up page where they can enter their information and a payment method.

Once they've paid for the content they can sign in to their new account to get access.

Free web sites generally don't require users to sign in to get access to content. Some might require a sign in for services. Like Yahoo! does with Yahoo! Mail. That's kind of expected, though.

You can't really know because some sites are not free but you can only know this if you create an account.

Contrary to the other answerers (so far), I think what you're asking is about a site that you might make and whether another person could tell if the site was made and/or hosted for free.

If it's hosted for free then there will be a link (or advert) somewhere on every page as a condition of the hosting.

If it's made for free then there might be an link/advert on every page, but not necessarily. But there is usually a credit hidden in the mark-up - do View > Page Source or Ctrl+U from your browser.
