In the past, commenting on other people's blog helps generate backlinks to your website for SEO purposes; however, since most sites include a rel='no follow,' I believe backlinks in the comment section don't play a part in SEO. However, it is still useful and provides many benefits.

If you comment on other people's blog within the same niche you are in and provide some insightful or useful information, people will most likely continue to read your comment and/or maybe click on your website to check up on you. Thus, increase traffic to your website. (Most of the time when you comment, they ask for your website).

Furthermore, commenting on other people's website help build your brand awareness. If you constantly provide useful information in your comment on the same website, people will start to recognize you. Thus, increase your personal brand or your company brand.
