dude you can switch from credit card to free, there should be a pull down bar..

you can create your own FREE Apple account by clicking on any FREE app, then iTunes should ask you to sign in or sign up. choose sign up and there will be an option to create a free account.

Like the other people said, there is a free account option now. This wasn't always so, possibly as a safety meassure against fake accounts for things like spamming low ratings on apps.
