If i bring my router from my old apartment to a new one, am I still connected to my old internet service?
I just moved out of an apartment and I have Charter Internet (haven't cancelled it yet, it's still active in my old apartment). When I got into my new apartment I hooked up my old router to an ethernet cord that is shared with the neighboring house that is allowing me to use their internet. When going on my laptop to connect to the internet, a window popped up saying i was connected to my router (which was under the same name as the one at my old apartment). My question is, is the internet that I am connected to still apart of my charter account in my name? I wasn't sure if the router connected me to my account at charter. I want to cancel charter, but I wanna make sure i'll still have internet at my new place. I assume that i'm just connected to the neighbors internet and the router doesn't matter.

Any help would be much appreciated. thank you.

I think what confuses you is the fact that your router is sending you a signal making you think you're getting an internet connection. That's not true. Routers do this regardless of whether you have internet signal coming in or not. So no, you're still using your neighbors' internet. If you needed to set up your internet connection with the same company they'd have to actually install it outside of your apartment on those tall poles with wires out on the street (idk what it's called sorry).

The router has nothing to do with the ISP so canccil Charter Internet at the old address NOW! You are now on a shared system with your neighboring house, You need to find out who the ISP is and contact them or get Charter Internet to give you your own private connection

No. What you're seeing is that you're connected to the same network since it's the same router. The purpose of a router is to deliver internet to multiple devices using one connection. You can still have the same network name (SSID), but have a different Internet Service Provider. (See diagram Below)

|
ISP --|> Modem --> Router --> Client (The device connected to the internet, ie. iPhone, Laptop, etc)
|

Basically what I'm trying to get at with the diagram is that even when your Internet Service Provider (ISP) changes, your network name on your router still the same. Unless of course you change it yourself.

Depends, I am not American so I don't know what kind of Internet service you have in terms of technology. But bigger issue is whose router is that? One on lend-lease from Charter to you, purchased direct from Charter or one you bought in Best Buy?

DSL you need to make sure yourself it is scot-free from Charter.
