This seems to be a very popular question.....
Similar to one of my previous answers, this is what I can think of.

1. Use forums (every post you make sells your site using the resource box)
2. write articles (again use the resource box to promote your site)
3. write emails (you'll need to have a mailing list for this)
4. use viral tools (like the below)

With today's competitive market, ranking and getting traffic is difficult for newbies. There are lots of strategies and techniques out there that you can implement into your campaign but I can suggest is if you are trying to learn one strategy try to master that or familiarize on that technique first before jumping to another strategy. For example you opted to do email marketing - focus on that strategy for a while until you are getting result. then you can move to pay per click, forum, article marketing, etc. You can combine two strategies if you prefer.

The best way to promote your site is make sure to add your url to google.com, this will index your site.
