Free CMS for a school?

I am trying to create a website where teachers can have their own mini website, and list homework, websites, and have a mini forum where they can answer questions. Each teacher would have their own logon. I've already seen moodle and a course is not really the direction I want this plus the district already has a moodle that nobody uses. So what software can achieve this?

Joomla can do all of this and it's free. You can assign users to be able to edit specific pages making it easy for you to assign teachers to their own pages.
