Why is important for an organisation to have links? Why is good for the company?

Backlinks can directly bring in new visitors as well as improving the site's search ranking in order to attract more first time visitors searching for related phrases.
While search engines are broadening the data sources used to rank a web site, the quantity and quality of backlinks remain an important metric in determining the popularity of a site which is an important factor in ranking search results.

There are a 2 reasons that I can think of:

1) Links help the company get more traffic/referral source from other websites. If customers don't know about your website and can't find you through Search, then links from other website is another way to get traffic from potential customers. Links from other websites are like referrals.

2) Links help with SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Backlinks from other websites is one of the major factors that Search Engines look at. Other than the quantity of links a company get, the quality is VERY important. Because of Penguin update, companies should get more quality links than quantity. Even if you have a lot of links but low quality, it won't do you good for Search Engine or from clients. Quality Link from quality websites will bring in quality customers.
