Is it hard to start a free online dating website?

I'm considering starting one in hopes of finding a creative way to make it easier for people to hookup, connect, and meet eachother. I hope to make a little money by charging advertisers for spots if the website gets popular. I know nothing about website designing though. Can someone tell me how hard it is to do this sort of thing? Will I need to take some type of class?

There are many websites that do that. It is not easy to develop it after which you have to work hard to get people to know it. It takes time and effort.

Yes because you need to have a large number of singles in very close proximity. Doing that is hard. I would not start it as a first venture. You need to have a big budget. There is already pof.com and okcupid.com.

It seems as though there's so much competition already. Maybe you could create one for a very specific niche. There are free dating scripts available, but they would probably need work to be bug free.

As Chris wrote, maybe think of another type of website you would like to try.

You could also try being an affiliate of another well-established dating website. Then you can get a feel of how hard or easy it would be to get users to sign up, and you could potentially make some money at the same time.
