In our current "digital age", I think pen pal sites are any social media site on the web. Like Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.

Personally, I think Google+ community circles is the best of the 3 for online conversations with new people. Pinterest is also another great way to connect with people of like interests. Once you make a new friend in one of those places you can exchange email addresses for a more private "pen pal" type of relationship.
