What torrent client are you using?

If uTorrent, on the bottom where you see the download and upload speeds? Right click on it and select your download or upload speed.

Any other program I can't really say.

You are at the mercy of things outside of your control. The ONLY thing you have control over is your computer! Your ISP and everything else outside is outside your control. So, all you can DO is make your computer perform as well as it can. That means no other applications. If you browse the net while downloading, your connection to you r ISP is shared between your browser and your torrent client, which means each gets HALF of the time with your ISP. Your connection to your ISP is like a one lane bridge with a speed limit imposed by your ISP. You have two lanes of traffic that have to merge to cross, and likewise at your ISP have to merge to come back. And THAT is why YOU may have a connection speed problem that you can do something about. Let the torrent client run alone. Don't try and do anything else or you slow your own connection speed accordingly because of the shared one lane bridge to and from your ISP. You only have yourself to blame if you share the one lane bridge to and from your ISP with other network hungry things, like online gaming. OK, so outside of your ISP any link your traffic passes through can be a bottleneck. And what about the computer at the other end that is the source? You are at the mercy of HIS connection speed! If he is sharing the file with 4 other people, you each only get at best 1/5th of HIS connection speed! Now, for seeds and peers. Look for high numbers. A seed is a person with the entire file and is sharing it. A peer has a portion of the file and is sharing the part they have. Your torrent client communicates with them and negotiates the transfer of parts you do not already have. The more seeds and peers, the more likely one is available to send the file or portion that they have. There is no guaranteed you will get the fastest that is available. You get the first source computer who agrees to send the file, regardless of the speed they have available. Torrents may be slow, but they ARE reliable. When done, you WILL have a verified copy of the shared file.
