What does the # on Twitter mean?

On Twitter I always see tweets with # signs in the front of something they type. Why is it there? What does it do? Do they just type it there for the heck of it.. or, what?

The # is a hashtag, which allows a user to search for that word that the person put the # in front of and find all tweets that have used that word with the hashtag in front.

That symbol in most case stands for number, such as an example your telephone #

its a hashtag. if you click on a hashtag you can view other tweets with the same one. you can also search them.
