How long before a new website sees good search engine traffic?
I'm looking for perhaps 100 a day from search engines. Is it dependent on the amount of articles on the site or the quality? Any tips?

You can have the best site in the world but if nobody visits it, nobody will know.

Depends entirely on how good your marketing is, so get cracking!
