It may be a bit more difficult to get a generic domain to rank in search engines, vs one that references it's niche in the domain name. I understand there is a .com for every word in the dictionary, you have to be a bit more creative to come up with a unique one, wordoid is a fun tool that generates new words based on a seen you provide it.

There are sites with tools that help you come up with fictitious names, including: wordlab.com, naming.net, wordoid.com, lingzini.com, namestation.com, some of these tools look up the domain name availability as you go.

Any name not already used in a .com web site name is probably not trademarked.
