Skype keeps disconnecting from internet?

I've used Skype for quite a few years now and have had no problems with it in the past but since I updated it about a week ago I've been unable to call/join calls on my laptop. It continually disconnects from the internet (has the swirly 2 arrows instead of the online sign next to my name at the top left). Like I said, I'm unable to join or call other people because of this, don't even get me started on how long messages take to send. I just wondered if anyone had any idea as to what could be causing this and/or how to fix it. I connect to the internet via WiFi and my laptop remains connected to the internet with my browser and any other program working absolutely fine, I can even play online games etc. without a bother but Skype continues to disconnect and so it is not an issue with my internet I do not believe, but rather the program itself.
