Firmware for my router. It connects to wireless fine. When I switch the wi-fi off no connection even though it is hooked up by an ethernet cable.

Why would you shut of the wifi on your router???

This may in fact be shutting off the feed to your lan ports also.

I'd turn it back on and see what happens.

Secondary thought. Go the the manufacturers web site of your computer and download the driver for lan or 10/100 connection of your model computer and install it.

Hope this helps.

Is your Lan connection active on your laptop? That is the most common reason it doesn't work.

your laptop wifi has been assigned an IP address by the router dhcp server , it is trying to connect to this address but cannot as it is already assigned , right click on the ethernet connection on the bottom right of the screen , click status then properties and then tcp/ip and click properties and assigne a different IP address manually OR go to the dhcp page on the router and reserve different IP address for all the devices you use so you avoid a clash each device must have a different address for wifi and cable connection
